ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Clay Buchholz cruised past the Tampa Bay Rays. Buchholz threw a three-hitter to stop his string of seven starts without a win, leading the Boston Red Sox over the Rays 3-0 on Sunday. Buchholz (6-8) walked none and struck out six. Only one runner reached second base during his second shutout this season and the sixth of his career. "He was in complete command for nine innings," Boston manager John Farrell said. "Outstanding." The right-handers previous win came over Kansas City on July 18, five days after he tossed a three-hitter in an 11-0 win against Houston. He was 0-3 in that span. "I felt good with all my pitches," said Buchholz, who threw just 98. "It doesnt always happen that way, but its fun when it does." Buchholz is the first Boston pitcher since Pedro Martinez in 2000 to have a pair of shutouts on three or fewer hits and no walks in the same season. Alex Cobb (9-7) gave up two runs and seven hits over 6 1-3 innings and took his first loss in two months. After losing to Pittsburgh on June 23, Cobb went 7-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 11 starts entering Sunday. "He had his A game going today and when hes on like that, its tough to scratch across runs," Cobb said about Buchholz. Tampa Bay (66-71), which has been shut out 16 times this season, has dropped 10 of 15. Xander Bogaerts singled leading off the third, went to third when Cobb was charged with an error for a wild pickoff try and scored to put Boston up 1-0 on Christian Vazquezs single. The Rays have at least one error in eight consecutive games for their longest streak since a team-record, 11-game stretch in 2004. After Mookie Betts had an RBI single in the fifth, David Ortiz made it 3-0 when he went the opposite way against a defensive shift and hit a run-scoring single through the vacated shortstop spot in the eighth. Ortiz has reached base in 16 straight games. He has 152 RBIs against the Rays, the most of any opponent. TRAINERS ROOM Red Sox: 2B Dustin Pedroia was out of the lineup one day after leaving with concussion-like symptoms. Farrell said Pedroia is not expected to play Monday, but felt better Sunday and the team is hopeful the injury is a short-term issue. Rays: CF Desmond Jennings was out of the lineup for the third straight game due to left knee soreness. ... OF David DeJesus (broken left hand) expects to be activated from the disabled list Monday. CASTILLO COUNTDOWN Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, signed to a $72.5 million, seven-year contract last week, singled in his first professional at-bat and ended up 1 for 2 as the DH for the Gulf Coast League Red Sox in Game 2 of the GCL championship series. Expected to join the Red Sox in September, Castillo is scheduled to play three to five innings in centre field in the final game of the GCL series Monday. MYERS MISERY Struggling Rays OF Wil Myers was out of the lineup. The 2013 AL Rookie of the Year has just six hits in 42 at-bats, including 16 strikeouts, since returning from a broken right wrist that sidelined him for 70 games. UP NEXT Red Sox RHP Rubby De La Rosa (4-5) and Rays LHP Drew Smyly (9-10) are the scheduled starters for the finale of a four-game series Monday. Last Wednesday night at Baltimore, Smyly became the second Tampa Bay pitcher to allow two hits or fewer over seven or more innings in consecutive starts. The Maple Leafs may not have had a pick until the third round, but they have made the biggest move of the second day of the Draft, dealing defenceman Carl Gunnarsson and a fourth-round pick in the draft to the St.His nickname is the Belldozer. Blake Bell, the new starting quarterback at Oklahoma, lived up to the billing in his first start in Norman, throwing for 413 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 73 per cent of his passes, finishing the game with a QBR of 96.7. Bell was a situational quarterback last season, used mainly in goal-line situations due to his 66, 252 pound frame. After losing the starting gig in the spring, Bell has taken over the reins from Trevor Knight and Kendal Thompson. Under Bob Stoops, the Sooners have often been set behind centre but after losing Landry Jones and his school record 39 wins to the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL, the program needed someone to step forward. Bell seems firmly planted in the role, and it will be exciting to see what he does going forward. The Sooners have a bye week before traveling to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish. A road game in front of 80,000 fans will be a much bigger test than a home date against Tulsa but its something he should be able to handle well. Bells gaudy stats from his debut as a starter were school records, which is impressive when you consider the list of quarterbacks before him, including Sam Bradford, the number one overall pick playing with the St. Louis Rams. In college, much like the NFL, its becoming increasingly important to have a mobile quarterback. Having Bell, who is used to converting short distance situations, also put up a record setting showing as a pocket passer bodes well for the Sooners going forward. An opposing assistant coach in the Big 12 was quoted as saying Bell is "an effective goal-line guy but not sure how hell do as a primary option. He might do great, but the jurys still out". After his performance against Tulsa, Bell put the rest of the Big 12 on notice and hell be a player to watch, not only against Notre Dame but also when he kicks off the conference schedule one week later against TCU. Look for The Belldozer to prove hes much more than just a flashy nickname in the weeks to come. Other quick hits from around the NCAA: - Bo Pelini may be in hot water ffor his remarks about the Cornhusker faithful but his teams performance against UCLA should be more of a concern.dddddddddddd Leading by 18 late in the first half, Nebraska was outscored 38-0 the rest of the way on their home turf. UCLA is an up-and-coming program, but that is still an awful showing in what was supposed to be a statement game for Pelini and his squad. - Kenny Guiton started in place of the injured Braxton Miller and led Ohio State to an 18-point victory at California. Urban Meyer didnt dumb down the offence at all as Guiton proved capable with 276 yards passing and four touchdowns. The Buckeyes have one more creampuff on the schedule in Florida A&M before opening their conference schedule at The Horseshoe against Wisconsin. - Jameis Winston is putting up some crazy stats for the Florida State Seminoles. Replacing EJ Manuel as quarterback was supposed to be a tough transition for the freshman but through two games, he has six passing touchdowns, two more on the ground and amazingly only five incompletions. - TCU is known for scheduling tough non-conference games in an effort to boost their rankings in the polls should they record victories. The strategy has seemingly backfired this season with losses to LSU and Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs find themselves out of the polls heading into their bye week. - Stanford beat Army by two touchdowns in an underwhelming performance for the 5th-ranked Cardinal. Army trailed at halftime by just one score and was looking to make history. Their program hasnt defeated a ranked team since 1972 – which is now 42 consecutive losses. - Butch Jones had a chance to start his coaching tenure at Tennessee with three straight victories, something that hadnt been done since 1926. How did his Vols respond? By giving up 59 points to the Oregon Ducks and losing by 45 points. - The coolest stat of the week comes from Oklahoma State. They managed a 56-point victory of Lamar, despite losing the time of possession battle by 15 minutes. For more on the college football season check out the TSN podcast each week!
