After three days off — including two rained out games and one travel day — the Winnipeg Goldeyes seemed out of their groove on Tuesday night, as they lost to the Can-Am Leagues New Jersey Jackals. The Goldeyes (18-11) began their eastern road trip losing 4-1 to the Jackals (13-9) at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, New Jersey. This was the first time the Goldeyes have played at Yogi Berra Stadium since the 2002 Northern League Championship Series. The Jackals beat the Goldeyes in the final two games of that series in Little Falls to claim their second straight league championship. The Jackals took the lead early on Tuesday night, with two solo home runs in the first inning to get ahead two runs. They added another run on a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth, and tacked on their fourth run in the bottom of the fifth.Jackals pitcher Gabriel Perez kept the Goldeyes bats quiet. He went strong for seven innings, facing only 22 batters, striking out five and giving up only one hit to the Fish.“He kept us off balance for the most part,” said Goldeyes Pitching Coach Jamie Vermilyea of Perez on the Jewel 101 Post-Game Show. “He pitched a good game.”Despite being on the hook for all four of the Jackals runs, and the loss, Goldeyes pitcher Chris Salamida was able to retire the last seven batters he faced. He also recorded six strikeouts, and only gave up one walk over his seven innings of work.“He also pitched well,” said Vermilyea. “He made a few mistakes there in the first inning, but he also got out of a few jams, and gave us a chance to win.”The Goldeyes only run came in top of the ninth. Casey Haerther reached on a single and then was driven in on a Jake Blackwood RBI double.“Its good to end on somewhat of a positive note. Hopefully we can keep the batting momentum going into the game tomorrow,” Vermilyea said. With the loss the Goldeyes move a game and a half back of the St. Paul Saints for second in the American Association North Division. The Goldeyes continue their series against the Jackals tomorrow and Thursday with both games going at 6 p.m. Tomorrow the Goldeyes will send Nick Hernandez (2-0) to the mound to face New Jerseys Keith Bilodeau (0-1).
