MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Ole Miss womens basketball team fought with the No. 16 West Virginia Mountaineers but came up a little short in a 66-61 loss in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Sunday. Taylor Manuel (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Rebels with 13 points while Erika Sisk (Oxford, Miss.) added 11. Shequila Joseph (London, England) posted a game-high 11 rebounds.Ole Miss (6-2) kept itself within striking distance in the fourth quarter, and with the Mountaineers leading 49-45 with 6:10 left in the game, the Rebels went to freshman Shelby Gibson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), who nailed a triple. Gibsons three, coupled with a three-point play from Sisk, cut the West Virginia lead down to three points with 2:17 left, but Ole Miss couldnt get a stop to complete the comeback.The Rebels used momentum from the end of the first half and carried it all the way over, erasing an 11-point Mountaineer lead to tie the game at 28 at the 6:34 mark of the third quarter and took their first lead of the game on a bucket from Shandricka Sessom (Byhalia, Miss.). Ole Miss used a 10-3 run to open the third quarter and held the home team without a bucket for 4:33 before a field goal at the 3:54 mark.The teams traded buckets and free throws for the remainder of the third quarter before West Virginia closed the period with a 4-2 spurt to take a 43-37 lead at the end of three quarters.Trailing 14-8 at the end for the first quarter of play, points were hard to come by for both teams in the first part of the second quarter. A pair of free throws from Madinah Muhammad (Chicago, Ill.) midway through the quarter were Ole Miss only points until Sisks bucket underneath at the 1:38 mark, keeping the Rebels without a field goal for nearly nine minutes dating back to the first half.Ole Miss got back into the game late in the second quarter. With 1:32 on the clock, Torri Lewis (Olive Branch, Miss.) nailed a pair of free throws and came up with the steal on the other end, leading to a layup by Sisk. Gibson then picked up a second straight steal for Ole Miss, leading to a three by Lewis - the first of the game for the Rebels. That trifecta cut the West Virginia lead, which was one at 11, down to four with 1:11 left. Manuel hit a pair of free throws late as West Virginia took a 26-20 halftime break.The Rebels had a tough first half from the floor, shooting a season-low 16.7 percent (4-of-24), but they forced 18 West Virginia turnovers and had 11 first-half steals.Both teams had a slow start to the game, but once one team got started, the other team got going as well. Joseph opened the scoring for the Rebels with a triple from the right side at the 7:27 mark. The teams were tied at 5-5 before the Mountaineers rattled of four unanswered to take a 9-5 lead at the first media timeout. West Virginia used a 9-0 run to keep the Rebels scoreless for 3:53 as they took a 14-5 lead - the largest of the game.
