MIAMI -- For Philadelphia, the season finale was about whats coming next year. For Miami, its about whats coming next week. And really, nothing else mattered. Thaddeus Young scored 20 points, Michael Carter-Williams had 12 in the final game of his impressive rookie campaign, and the 76ers wrapped up a dismal season by topping the Heat 100-87 on Wednesday night for their second win of the season over the two-time defending NBA champions. Brandon Davies had 11 points, while Henry Sims, James Anderson and Casper Ware each scored 10 for the 76ers (19-63). "We stuck together," Young said. "We did a very good job of staying together, playing as a cohesive unit. Sometimes the odds were stacked against us but we didnt let that get us down." Dwyane Wade scored 16 points in 23 minutes for Miami (54-28), which got 13 from Toney Douglas and 11 from Ray Allen. Shane Battier -- in his final season barring a seismic change of heart -- scored nine points and eclipsed the 30,000-minute mark in his regular-season career. "Couldnt be more proud of my guy," Battiers wife, Heidi Battier, wrote on Twitter. Her husband half-seriously talked about the milestone with Heat coach Erik Spoelstra earlier in the day. "If you had told me when I was a little boy that one day youre going to play 30,000 regular-season NBA minutes, Id have said Get out of here," Battier said. "Even at 35, 13 years in, the novelty of playing in the NBA and living my dream is still there." The Heat -- who came into the night locked into the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs -- rested LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers, Rashard Lewis and Chris Andersen, and found out before the game that their quest for a third straight NBA title opens Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Their first-round opponent: Charlotte. "That team competes very hard," Wade said. Miami went 4-0 against the Bobcats this season, though one was a one-point game and another went to overtime. And since Miami landed James and Bosh, the Heat are 15-0 against the club now owned by Michael Jordan, a guy who knows a thing or two about three-peats and whose jersey was retired long ago in Miami as a show of respect. "Theyre a worthy, worthy opponent," Spoelstra said of the Bobcats. "So weve got to get to work." The last time Miami and Charlotte met was March 3, when James scored a career-high 61 points. Wednesdays game was decided in the third, when the 76ers outscored the Heat 29-15. By then, Wade had played 23 minutes in one last tuneup, and the Heat seemed content to get the second season started. "Our record doesnt show we had a good season but the main thing is we stayed together," Carter-Williams said. Philadelphia finished with the leagues second-worst record, but has the expected rookie of the year in Carter-Williams and could have as many as seven picks -- two of them out of the lottery -- in this years draft. This year was bleak. The future shouldnt be in Philly. "The relief that the season has ended truly does not creep into my mind because its trumped by the excitement that I see going forward," 76ers coach Brett Brown said. "Im so excited to watch the direction of ping-pong balls. Im so excited to watch what we do with our summer leagues. ... I see the foundation." Brown said it was a season where he wanted to emphasize fitness and start building a culture when it comes to professionalism in terms of absorbing scouting reports, weight-room sessions and studying video. He thinks that was accomplished. "At times I get excited because I think I know something others may not," Brown said. "I feel like were heading in the right direction. I hope we can get some luck with the draft and move our program forward." NOTES: It was Fan Appreciation Night in Miami, and Battier addressed the sellout crowd in a brief pregame ceremony. "Lets go Heat and lets go get this ring," said Battier, who logged nearly 40 minutes, his most since the 2011-12 season. ... Brown, who was an assistant with San Antonio before taking the 76ers job last summer, plans to fly there Thursday night to visit with Gregg Popovich and the Spurs staff. ... Greg Oden returned to the Miami lineup, his first appearance since March 26 because of back issues and more recently, a stomach virus. He had two points and five rebounds in 13 minutes. As TSN reported Thursday, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport is under intense pressure from the federal government to focus drug testing on athletes who compete in international events representing Canada. Since funding for the tests has been frozen and the cost of testing can eclipse $1,000 per test, university athletes in a number of sports are being tested less often. Jaylon Ferguson Ravens Jersey . Both of Padakins goals came in the second period while Zane Jones added a single in the first period for Calgary (13-6-4). While other big-market clubs such as the New York Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders FC might disagree, Sundays MLS Cup title win proves that Galaxy are the dominant team in the league. The Galaxy won the first of their impressive five titles back in 2002, coincidentally against the New England Revolution, and their second title came in 2005, again a win over the Revolution in 2005. The club then failed to reach MLS Cup in each of the next three seasons before getting back to the final in 2009 and falling short against West rivals Real Salt Lake. Motivated by falling short, the team returned to the showpiece event in 2011, this time armed with a trio of superstars in Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane and David Beckham. It is with those three mega-stars that the Galaxy have done their best work, knocking off the Houston Dynamo in both 2011 and 2012, while sending Beckham off into the sunset with a title. The Galaxy essentially dominated the league those years, but this seasons triumph speaks volumes about the clubs resiliency, given the path they took to reach their ultimate goal. Arenas club got off to a slow start, but came on strong in the summer, roaring up the Western Conference standings courtesy of a 10-match unbeaten streak from Aug. 20 to Oct. 4. The team headed into the final two weeks of the season level on points with the Seattle Sounders and battling for the Supporters Shield. They came up short in the race for the Shield, but the setback seemed to serve the club well heading into the postseason. After battling Real Salt Lake to a scoreless draw in the opening contest of the Conference semifinals, the Galaxy clicked into gear in the second leg, thrashing RSL, 5-0, to set up a date with Seattle in the West finals. In the West finals a goal from Marcelo Sarvas gave the Galaxy a 1-0 opening leg win, but heading to Seattle for the second leg would certainly be a challenge.dddddddddddd Seattle grabbed a 2-1 aggregate lead with goals from Brad Evans and Clint Dempsey, but the Galaxy didnt panic in a hostile environment, showed some intestinal fortitude and grabbed the all-important road goal to advance via a tiebreaker. Heading into the final, all the storylines centered around Donovan, who was looking for his storybook ending to an outstanding career. But it was the Galaxys other stars that came up huge. Gyasi Zardes, often looked upon as a bit of a forgotten man next to the blinding star power of Donovan and Keane, got the party rolling for the hosts in the 52nd minute with a well-taken left-footed strike. The Revolution pulled one back through Chris Tierney, sending the game into extra time, where the visiting side had the better of the play. But just when the Galaxy needed a superstar to step up, Keane did the trick as the Irish international got in behind the defense via a nice through ball from Marcelo Sarvas before depositing it into the back of the net. Keane, the newly-minted league MVP, came up with an MVP-level play right when they needed it, which is what dominant teams do -- they come up large in the clutch. The win marks the clubs third title in the last four years, and Keanes third title with Los Angeles since arriving from Tottenham-Hotspur in 2011. For Donovan, there is no other way the greatest player in American soccer history would want to end his career, with a sixth title. Donovan joins some impressive company on the list of athletes that have won a championship in their final season, which includes Ray Bourque, John Elway, Bill Russell and Joe DiMaggio. Of the clubs five titles, Sundays win is probably the most satisfying given the route they took to get there in the regular season. It certainly cements the Galaxys place as Major League Soccers greatest dynasty. ' ' '
